Capturing Fireworks

Bonfire night is nearly upon us so I thought I would post appropriate details to help with capturing the perfect results

Necessary Equipment

  • DSLR camera (model irrelevant)
  • Standard kit lens (18mm -55mm or 18mm -105mm / 18-135mm)
  • Corded remote control (although an infra red remote will suffice)
  • Tripod
  • Piece of card (preferably black) which is large enough so that it can fit over the front lens
  • Lens cloth
  • Handheld torch (preferably a  small LED version) this will make it easier to check / change any settings on the camera

This workshop covers how to set up and use studio lighting equipment, to light and capture beautiful portraits with the minimum of fuss or effort.

The days workshop is entirely practical and it is intended to cover the following:

  • Choosing the correct equipment – studio lights, flash meter, backgrounds and other accessories.
  • Lighting techniques for shadow free results.
  • Choosing the appropriate exposure mode.
  • Using a flash meter for correct exposure.
  • White balance setting and use of a grey card.
  • How to pose your model.
  • Batch processing / adjusting your images for final output.

Full instruction with notes  / lighting diagrams provided.

A model and make-up artist will be present on the day

Duration of workshop 11.00am  - 4.00pm with 1hr for lunch

Light refreshments in the form of tea / coffee included

The increasing sophistication and controls found on modern DSLR’s often results in a multitude of different menus available to the end user. More often than not, only 20% of this functionality is actually used. The amount of control and the subsequent number of options displayed when entering the menu console often results in confusion. This is something that should be undertaken on a regular basis and should be considered part of your regular maintenance routine. Unlike computer hard drives the memory cards used in all digital cameras (DSLRs and compact cameras) tend to be solid state as in they have no moving parts (with the exception of the IBM / Hitachi compact flash micro drives) and should theoretically be free of errors that may occur due to physical damage.
